Researcher for assessment of realistic electromagnetic exposure of humans for 5G wireless systems in public and industry

The "WAVES" research group ( http://www.waves.intec.ugent.be/ ) is the expertise center of the Department of Information Technology of imec-Ghent University in Belgium for physical-layer research of advanced wireless networks and exposure of humans to the electromagnetic waves of wireless systems. What you will do 5G wireless networks and systems are nowadays rolled out in many countries. They offer very promising characteristics with respect to capacity and latency in the networks. They will open a lot of opportunities for many new applications in the domains of connected vehicles, virtual reality, Internet of Things, and many others. The assessment of 5G exposure has important challenges: A study of the dynamics of beamforming of advanced Massive MIMO wireless systems for realistic scenarios is needed. The dynamics will be dependent on many parameters, and it is challenging to include these dynamics in the simulations. The exposure of the user by the basestation as well as by the smartphone will need to be included. It is the first time that millimeter waves (e.g., 26 GHz band) will be used in wireless access and in industrial applications. The simulation tools for outdoor and indoor exposure calculations will need to be extended to cover these frequencies and simulations of realistic scenarios will have to be executed and interpreted. The experimental exposure assessment at millimeter waves is also new and challenging. The capture of the dynamical electromagnetic waves at these very high frequencies is not yet fully investigated. You will be part of the imec-WAVES research team participating in the European project SEAWave. ( https://seawave-project.eu ). In your research for the European project, you will investigate solutions for these challenges. Candidates with a Master degree in Electrical engineering, Computer engineering, and Physics engineering qualify for this research job. Experience in wireless networks (software and/or hardware) is a strong plus.
