Applications are invited for a senior scientific position in the research group of Professor Matthew Gaunt at the University of Cambridge. This is an opportunity for an experienced and ambitious synthetic chemist to take on a central role in the scientific development, leadership and operation of a research group working at the interface of synthetic organic chemistry, catalysis, medicinal chemistry and chemical biology.
The Gaunt Group develops new concepts and methods for molecular synthesis, with particular interests in catalytic reaction discovery, the development of new synthetic strategies and the application of these advances to biologically important molecules. The successful candidate will work closely with Professor Gaunt to help shape and deliver the group's research programme, contributing to the development of new research ideas, the initiation and coordination of projects, the preparation of research proposals and the publication of scientific results.
This is primarily a scientific leadership role, rather than a conventional laboratory management position. The postholder will be expected to bring substantial research experience, intellectual independence and sound scientific judgement to the position. They will play an active role in guiding ongoing research, advising on experimental design and mechanistic interpretation, troubleshooting challenging chemistry and identifying promising new directions. They will also contribute to the supervision and mentoring of postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and undergraduate researchers, with particular responsibility for supporting early-stage researchers and helping them develop the skills and confidence required for independent research.
As a senior member of the group, the postholder will help maintain a productive, collaborative and supportive research environment, providing continuity of scientific expertise across multiple research programmes. They will take responsibility for aspects of laboratory organisation, research infrastructure, equipment, resources and financial oversight, ensuring the effective operation of the research laboratories. There will also be opportunities to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training, depending on the interests and career aspirations of the successful candidate.
The position would be particularly attractive to a researcher considering a future independent academic career, offering an opportunity to develop experience in scientific leadership, research strategy, project development, funding applications and the supervision of researchers, while remaining actively engaged in cutting-edge synthetic chemistry.
We are looking for an individual with a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry or a closely related discipline, together with substantial postdoctoral or equivalent research experience and a strong record of scientific achievement. The successful candidate will have broad expertise in modern synthetic chemistry, excellent experimental and problem-solving skills, and the ability to contribute intellectually to research programmes beyond their immediate area of specialisation. Experience of mentoring researchers, coordinating collaborative projects and contributing to research proposals and publications would be particularly valuable. Equally important are excellent communication and organisational skills, initiative, sound judgement and a genuine commitment to supporting the development of others.
This position offers the opportunity to combine active scientific engagement with a substantial leadership role in a dynamic research environment, contributing directly to the direction, development and success of an internationally recognised programme in synthetic chemistry.
