Post-Doctoral Research Visit F/M Postdoctoral Position in ML for Climate in Lyon, France Download job offer in PDF format Contract type : Fixed-term contract Level of qualifications required : PhD or equivalent Fonction : Post-Doctoral Research Visit About the research centre or Inria department The Inria research centre in Lyon is the 9th Inria research centre, formally created in January 2022. It brings together approximately 300 people in 17 research teams and research support services. Its staff are distributed in Villeurbanne, Lyon Gerland, and Saint-Etienne. The Lyon centre is active in the fields of software, distributed and high-performance computing, embedded systems, quantum computing and privacy in the digital world, but also in digital health and computational biology. Context Postdoctoral Position in ML for Climate in Lyon, France Louis Couston from the Climate Physics group and Ségolène Martin from the Inria OCKHAM team at ENS de Lyon, France, are inviting applications for a postdoctoral position (up to 3 years, ERC IceAblation) on Machine learning emulators of polar ocean dynamics. Can neural networks emulate chaotic, multi-scale ocean flows with tipping points beneath Antarctic ice shelves, generalize across regimes, and stay stable when coupled online to a numerical solver? We have ready-to-use NEMO simulation data and offer freedom to explore physics-constrained learning, diffusion models, foundation models, and online training. Prior experience in ML/AI is needed (ideally knowledge in generative modeling and imaging) but we do not require a background in oceanography. Review of applications starts November 2nd, 2026. Details available here. Assignment Assignments: With the support of researchers from the Climate Physics group and Inria OCKHAM team, the recruited person will develop machine learning methods (probably based on diffusion methods) to emulate polar ocean dynamics. Collaboration: The recruited person will collaborate with researchers in climate physics and machine learning, combining expertise in ocean modeling and artificial intelligence. Responsibilities: The recruited person will be responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating machine learning models, and will take initiatives to explore new research directions. Steering/Management: The recruited person will manage their research activities and contribute to project meetings and scientific discussions. Main activities Main activities: • Develop machine learning models to emulate polar ocean dynamics. • Explore physics-informed and generative modeling approaches. • Evaluate model accuracy, generalization, and stability in online simulations. Additional activities: • Collaborate with researchers in machine learning and climate physics. • Present research results at scientific meetings and conferences.
