H4PFC using HV BDS GaN and CCM/CRM PFC comparison Your role Key responsibilities in your new role Background / Problem Statement • 1. In a conventional AC DC power supply, the rectifier bridge thermal performance becomes a critical concern for power levels above ~160 W due to conduction losses concentrated in the diode bridge. • 2. A common approach to reduce these losses is to replace the passive bridge with: • an active bridge, or • a bridgeless PFC topology such as totem pole PFC. Selected Approach for This Project • The project will use an H4PFC architecture implemented with bidirectional high voltage GaN devices to address rectifier bridge thermal limitations and improve efficiency. Hardware Evaluation Plan (CCM H4PFC) • Perform a hardware evaluation of a CCM (Continuous Conduction Mode)H4PFC implementation using the Infineon ICE3PCS01 PFC controller. • Evaluation focus areas should include (as applicable): • thermal behavior of power stage components (especially compared tobridge based solutions), o,,controller behavior in CCM operation, • efficiency and loss distribution across the power stage. Simulation / Loss Analysis Work • Run simulations and perform loss calculations comparing CRM vs. CCMoperation, including: • CRM loss estimation (e.g., peak currents and switching behaviorimplications), • CCM loss estimation (e.g., RMS currents, conduction losses, switchinglosses), • clear comparison of loss contributors and operating tradeoffs. Action Items • Build / set up CCM H4PFC hardware using ICE3PCS01 • Execute hardware evaluation (efficiency, thermal, stability, operating waveforms) • Run simulations for CRM and CCM • Complete CRM/CCM loss calculations based on simulation results • Summarize findings and recommend preferred operating mode / designadjustments Your profile Qualifications and skills to help you succeed Target Majors: • Undergraduate/Graduate students in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), Preferable Qualifications: • Hands-on experience with circuit design. • Familiarity with Plecs /FEA simulation software. • Completed coursework in Power Electronics.) #WeAreIn for driving decarbonization and digitalization.
