Ionic Transport and Dynamic Processes in Perovskite Thin-Film Devices
Master internship - LeuvenPosted Oct 17, 2026
Overview
Metal halide perovskites have emerged as a
versatile semiconductor platform for applications including photovoltaics,
light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, and electronic devices. Beyond their
excellent optoelectronic properties, these materials exhibit significant ionic
mobility, leading to a rich set of dynamic phenomena such as transient
electrical responses, memory effects, and non-equilibrium transport processes.
While these effects are often associated with performance limitations, they
also provide exciting opportunities to engineer novel device functionalities
and adaptive material systems. In this project, you will investigate ionic
transport phenomena in perovskite thin-film devices and explore how these
processes can be influenced through different external stimuli. Device
fabrication will be carried out using imec's state-of-the-art research
infrastructure, including microfabrication facilities and dedicated thin-film
materials laboratories. You will gain hands-on experience in cleanroom
processing techniques such as photolithography, thin-film deposition,
encapsulation, and device integration. Following fabrication, the devices will be
characterized using a broad range of electrical and optical measurement
techniques, including current-voltage measurements, transient electrical
characterization, and time-dependent device analysis. The project will focus on
understanding how ionic motion affects device behavior and how different
operating conditions can be used to tailor dynamic responses in perovskite
systems. Particular attention will be devoted to identifying relationships
between material properties, device architecture, and ionic transport dynamics. You will work within a multidisciplinary
team consisting of PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, senior researchers,
and professors active in the fields of optoelectronics, semiconductor devices,
and advanced materials. The project provides an excellent opportunity to
acquire practical cleanroom experience, develop advanced experimental skills,
and gain exposure to cutting-edge research conducted in an international
research environment. The student is expected to be self-motivated, eager to
learn new experimental techniques, and comfortable working in a collaborative
research environment. A background in semiconductor devices, electronics,
materials science, physics, or photonics is advantageous.
